10 years in Data Consulting

March 2025 will mark a decade since I transitioned from my first passion, particle physics, to the industry. I began my journey as a BI consultant with a company in Lausanne and have thrived in this field ever since. I truly love what I do, fully aware that this is a luxury, and I am grateful for it.

My role as a consultant is very dynamic; challenging and rewarding in equal measure. While much of my work revolves around solving clients’ problems, as I’ve gained experience (and a bit of, ehem, “seniority”), I now find myself in a supervisory role for fellow consultants. This means I have a front-row seat to many more projects than I could have ever handled alone, and I am grateful to my team for their dedication and hard work.

As I celebrate this milestone and look ahead to the next decade with fresh enthusiasm, I have taken time to reflect on my journey and distill some key lessons from my experience. I am excited to share these insights with you:

  1. Be brave enough to be good enough
  2. Seek clarity
  3. Show your work
  4. Don't make too much noise
  5. Document your processes for your own reference
  6. Don’t neglect the fundamentals
  7. Actively seek constructive criticism
  8. Cultivate adaptability
  9. Gain a comprehensive understanding of the project
  10. The client is always right

Each week, I will be diving deeper into these top 10 ideas. I hope you find them valuable and would love to hear your feedback.
